More information about San Marcos

San Marcos is a municipality and departmental capital of the department of the same name in the Republic of Guatemala. The town was founded by a contingent commanded by Captain Juan de León Cardona on April 25,1533. In 1752 the residents of the town requested the installation of a Municipal City Council, being chaired the following year by Sebastián de Barrios. San Marcos was one of the original municipalities of the State of Guatemala founded in 1825.

It was in the department of Quetzaltenango / Soconusco, whose head was Quetzaltenango, also was in the Del Barrio circuit that belonged to District No.10 for the delivery of justice From 1838, San Marcos was part of the region that formed the ephemeral State of Los Altos, until it was recovered by force by General Rafael Carrera. In September 1897, after the failure of the Central American Exposition and the serious economic crisis that Guatemala was facing after the fall of the international price of coffee and silver, a group of revolutionaries took up arms in order to seize several institutions and avoid that the ruler remained in power. On September 7, the day the revolution broke out, the rebels advanced against San Marcos, taking the city. On September 15, the revolutionary forces proclaimed their victory and took Ocós, Colomba and Coatepeque, but on October 4 the army counterattacked and regained control ending the revolution. President Reina Barrios was originally from San Marcos, and in retaliation on October 23,1897, he moved the head of the department to San Pedro Sacatepéquez.

On October 25,1902, the town was destroyed by the eruption of the Santa María Volcano, and on December 16,1935, the government of General Jorge Ubico annexed the town of San Pedro Sacatepéquez, forming a single municipality to which he called it "The San Marcos Union", as part of its program of administrative simplification to alleviate the effects of the Great Depression. The revolutionary governments reversed this decision and the Union San Marcos was abolished on July 20,1945, a year after the resignation of Ubico, and the municipalities of San Pedro Sacatepéquez and San Marcos were re-established, the latter becoming again the head of the department.

In December 2010 it was made public that Juan Alberto Ortiz López, alias "Chamalé" or "Hermano Juanito", and Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera of the Sinaloa Cartel operated together and controlled the department of San Marcos and the border municipalities, from where shipments They had left Guatemala to be transported to Mexico and then to the United States, Ortiz López also owned a cable company in Malacatán, pastor of his evangelical church on one of his farms in the same municipality, and had registered more than ten homes under his name between Coatepeque Quetzaltenango and Ayutla Tecún Umán and Malacatán. After being captured in 2011 and extradited to the United States, on July 8,2015 the Florida Middle District Court sentenced Chamalé to two hundred and sixty-two months in prison and sixty more probation for being found guilty of selling, distribute or store drugs. On November 7,2012 the town suffered a strong earthquake that damaged western Guatemala and severely affected the infrastructure of the town.
