Tejutla is a municipality that belongs to the department of San Marcos, in the Republic of Guatemala. Its territorial extension is 142 square kilometers and is organized into five administrative zones. The town where the Villa de Tejutla is located is so old that when the Spanish conquerors arrived in the region in 1524, it was already a town of great importance within the towns of the Mam race, for its textile industry. During colonial times it was the important convent of "Santiago de Tejutla" in charge of the Mercedarian friars, the town was officially founded on July 25,1627 as "Santiago Tenango". By 1690 Tejutla included the modern municipalities of Comitancillo, Ixchiguán, Concepción Tutuapa, Sipacapa, Sibinal, Tajumulco, Tacaná and part of San Miguel Ixtahuacán.
Santiago Tejutla was one of the original municipalities of the State of Guatemala founded in 1825. It was in the department of Quetzaltenango / Soconusco, whose head was Quetzaltenango, and in the Del Barrio tenement that belonged to District No.10 for the administration of justice. After belonging to the ephemeral State of Los Altos between 1838 and 1840, it once again became part of the State of Guatemala, and during the government of General Rafael Carrera it was an important political and religious center. However, after the Liberal Reformation in 1871, its influence waned as the influence of the religious was eliminated by the government of General Justo Rufino Barrios. In 2005 he was severely affected by the storm Stan.
