Arenas de San Pedro is a city and municipality of Spain located in the south of the province of Ávila, autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is the capital of the Arenas de San Pedro region, better known as the Tiétar Valley. The altitude of the municipality reaches 2343 m at the peak of La Mira, in the Sierra de Gredos. The municipality has a population of 6556 inhabitants, which makes it the third largest population in the province, after Ávila and Arévalo. The population centers of Ramacastañas, La Parra and Hontanares belong to the municipality in the form of districts.
Good part of the municipality belongs to the protected area of the regional park of the Sierra de Gredos, being the most populated municipality of the park's surroundings. The patron saint festivities of the town are celebrated in honor of the Virgen del Pilar and San Pedro de Alcántara. The origins of the municipality go back to the Middle Ages, when a group of settlers from a previous nucleus founded the town on the current site. He received the title of village in 1393, under the reign of Henry III of Castile. During the rest of the Middle Ages and the Modern Age it was head of a manor that grouped Arenas de San Pedro and the villages of El Arenal, Guisando, Hontanares, El Hornillo, La Parra, Poyales del Hoyo and Ramacastañas.
In the eighteenth century the town witnessed the presence of the family of the infant Luis Antonio de Borbón y Farnesio and his small court of artists who accompanied him for a time in the neoclassical palace that the infant had built in the town.
