Cook County

Cook County, founded in 1831, is one of 102 counties in the US state of Illinois. It is the second most populous county in the United States after Los Angeles County. In 2008, the county had a population of 5,294,664 inhabitants and a population density of 2,161 people per km², holding 43.3% of the total population of the state of Illinois. The population of Cook County is greater than that of twenty-nine states and the combined population of the seven least populated states. The county seat is Chicago. The county is named in honor of Daniel Pope Cook. The county is located within the Chicago metropolitan area.
