More information about Potchefstroom
Potchefstroom is a large academic city housing the Potchefstroom campus of the North West University, located on the banks of the Mooi River, located 120 kilometers west-southwest of Johannesburg, in the North West Province of South Africa. It is planned to rename the city as Tlokwe, although many Afrikaner residents oppose the change. The city, founded in 1838 by the Voortrekkers, was the oldest settlement of descendants of Europeans in the then Transvaal. It was the first capital of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek. Also, for a short time during the 1840s, the cities of Potchefstroom and Winburg as well as their surrounding territories were united in a political entity known as the Republic of Winburg-Potchefstroom.
Voortrekker leader Andries Hendrik Potgieter was elected as the head of the republic. On December 16,1880, the first shots of the First Boer War were made when the Boers laid siege to the old fortress. The site was ended amicably on March 23,1881. The British built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house women, children and elderly Boers. The city is also the annual host of the Aardklop Festival, an Afrikaner cultural festival held at the end of September every year.
