Dynasty Terter, also known as Terteridas or Terterovtsi, was a noble Bulgarian royal house that ruled the Second Bulgarian Empire between 1280 and 1292, as well as between 1300 and 1323. The Terterids were originally of Cumanian origin, according to Plamen Pavlov it was from a branch of the noble Cumana dynasty Terteroba that had settled in Bulgaria as part of the second wave of Cumana migration, coming from the Kingdom of Hungary after 1241. The Terteroba clan had ruled the steppe proto-state of Cumania at the end of the century XI, as well as in the middle of the 12th century under Köten.
The first representatives of the dynasty in Bulgaria were the despots Aldimir and his older brother Jorge Terter who was crowned emperor of Bulgaria as Jorge I, marrying the Bulgarian Maria. After his reign, Bulgaria was under the control of the Golden Horde, with Nogai Khan appointing the next ruler, Smilets, who was from another noble family, and was succeeded briefly by his son Ivan II. In 1299-1300, Bulgaria was controlled by the Mongolian Chaka. Chaka was deposed by Jorge Terter's son, Teodoro Svetoslav, beginning the second reign of the Terteridas, which also included that of his son, Jorge II of Bulgaria. The Terter dynasty was succeeded by the Sisman, a noble dynasty of Vidin, also of Cumanian origin. One of the members of this family, Balik, created in 1320/1325, the Principality of Karvuna, which extended from the Mesembria city to the Danube Delta. Afterwards, his brother Dobrotitsa declared himself a despot.
Throughout the history of the Principality the rulers undertook an almost continuous war with the Bulgarians, the Byzantines and the Turks. In 1388, Ivanko, the last despot of Dobruja, died in battle against the Turks, but the territory was part of the Principality of Wallachia, becoming a zone of conflict between the Vlachs and the Turks.
