The Capayanes were an indigenous people now extinct who lived in a part of northwestern Argentina, the northern tip of Cuyo, and the extreme northwest of the region of the Sierras Pampeanas, ie in the intersection of sets of three macroregions of the territory from Argentina. Their houses of mud and adobe were sometimes built at the foot of a large tree whose crown served as a roof.

Around 1480 the Inca Empire invaded the region of the Diaguitas and Capayanes, incorporating their territories to the Tahuantinsuyu. From 1607, with the Spanish domination began its dispersion. The Capayanes participated in the general uprising of 1632 along with the Olongastas and the other Diaguitas. After the suffocation of the uprising the Capayanes were partly transferred to Chile and began its assimilation, miscegenation and subsequent extinction at the end of the 18th century. An apartment in the province of Catamarca bears his name, the Capayán department.
