Florence is a Colombian municipality, capital of the Department of Caquetá. It is the most important city in the south-east of the country because of its number of inhabitants, its more than one hundred years of history and institutional development of the State, it is known as "The Golden Gate of the Colombian Amazon". The territory occupied by Florence was populated in the mid-nineteenth century by settlers attracted by the bonanza of the cinchona and later rubber. The city was officially founded on December 25,1902 by Father Doroteo de Pupiales, from a winery of rubber tappers located on the banks of the La Perdiz stream, and was erected in the municipality through Decree No.642 of June 17,1912 and since then it holds the title of capital of Caquetá. As the capital of the department, Florence hosts the headquarters of the Governorate of Caquetá, the Departmental Assembly, the Departmental Court, the General Prosecutor's Office, the Departmental Comptroller's Office, the Regional Procurator's Office, the Directorate of National Taxes and Customs, and other State institutions and agencies.
As well as the University of the Amazon, the Caja de Compensación Familiar del Caquetá, the Company of Fairs and Slaughterhouses of Caquetá and the Chamber of Commerce of Florencia for the Caquetá. It is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Florence.
