The municipality has a runway for light aircraft and south of it is the Ixobel Estate, with caves that constitute a tourist attraction.

The area occupied by the modern state of Belize, bordering with Poptún, was never occupied by Spain because of the inhospitable terrain and its remoteness, although some exploratory expeditions were carried out in the sixteenth century on which they relied to claim the area as their own. The figure of General Rafael Carrera emerged and managed to pacify the country in 1851. By that time, the Caste War began in Yucatan, an indigenous uprising that left thousands of European settlers killed, and the Belizean and Petenero representatives were put on alert not only because the Yucatecan refugees were fleeing to Peten and Belize, but it was feared that Carrera, given his strong alliance with the Guatemalan Indians, would propitiate the indigenous revolutions in Central America, but the matter did not happen, and Guatemala entered. In a phase of peace and prosperity from 1851.

The border of Poptún with Belize was delimited by means of the treaty Wyke-Aycinena established between the government of General Rafael Carrera by means of its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pedro de Aycinena on 30 April 1859. At that time, Guatemala maintained cordial relations with the British crown and when the threat of William Walker was presented again in Central America in 1859, the British provided arms to the Guatemalan government to confront it, in exchange for which the Carrera regime had to cede the territory of Belize to the British Empire, which already had a commercial center and contraband on the coast of This treaty has since been reported in Guatemala as the biggest mistake of Rafael Carrera's conservative government.
