More information about San Andrés

San Andrés is a municipality located in the northwest of the Department of Petén, its territorial extension, after the incorporation of San Felipe and Mactum, is 8,874 km², being the largest municipality in the country, becoming even more extensive than the rest of departments with the exception of Izabal and Alta Verapaz. After the Independence of Central America in 1825, the Assembly of the State of Guatemala divided the territories of the country and assigned the entire Petén area, which by then had no well-defined limits with Mexico or with Belize, as a dependent province of the Department of Verapaz.

Now, as of April 3,1838, the Liberal Creoles established the State of Los Altos, until it was forcibly reinstated by the conservative mestizo general Rafael Carrera in 1840. As a result of that fact, Petén became a independent district in 1839. During the caste war in Yucatan, many European settlers entered Guatemala and Belize through the area of San Felipe, Mactum and San Andrés, fleeing violence in the region, which was then an independent state.

The border of Mactum and San Felipe with Mexico was established in 1896, after the Herrera-Mariscal Treaty signed by President Justo Rufino Barrios in 1882 with the government of Mexico, and through which the Guatemalan government definitively renounced its claims on the The territory of Soconusco and Guatemala lost about 10,300 km, fourteen towns, nineteen villages and fifty-four ranches, while Mexico lost only one town and twenty-eight ranches, so the agreement for Guatemala was as nefarious as the report of the director of the Commission. De Límites, the engineer Claudio Urrutia, was confiscated by the government of President Manuel Estrada Cabrera when it was made public in 1900, and then by the government of the lawyer Julio César Méndez Montenegro when it was reprinted in 1968. In 1990, more than 93% of the surface of the municipality was declared a natural area protected by the central government, but the territory is so large and remote that frequent environmental and ecological problems reported by logging and oil in the region of Laguna del Tigre, in which Basic Resources originally operated. The exploitation of Basic Resources in this area has been harshly criticized for its environmental consequences, which it can not hide despite the implementation of supposed environmental conservation projects.

Finally, at the end of the 1990s the company Basic Resources was bought by the US company Union Pacific, and sold again in 2001, for 102.5 million dollars to the French private company Perenco. The municipality of San Andrés is located at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level, according to the BM.
