San Lucas Tolimán is a municipality in the Sololá department of the south-western region of the Republic of Guatemala, located on the shores of Lake Atitlán and on the slopes of the Tolimán Volcano. During the colonial period it was part of the corregimiento of Tecpán Atitlán, and then of the mayor of the department of Sololá in 1730. It was assigned from 1540 to 1754 to the «Province of the Holy Name of Jesus» of the Franciscan friars, and belonged to the parish Based in Santiago Atitlán.
After the Independence of Central America in 1821, was in the extensive department of Sololá / Huehuetenango, and in 1838 was part of the ephemeral State of Los Altos until it was reincorporated into the State of Guatemala by the conservative general Rafael Carrera in 1840.
