Santiago Atitlán is a municipality in the department of Sololá in the Republic of Guatemala. The municipal seat, with the same name, is located on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán at an altitude of 1593 meters above sea level. It had a population estimated at more than 46,000 inhabitants for 2010, which mostly belongs to the Tz'utujil ethnic group. Its economy is characterized by agriculture and the production and sale of handicrafts, as well as the commercialization of basic products. There is also an important hotel sector. It is the only municipality that preserves the place name of Lake Atitlán.
During the colonial era it was part of the encomienda of "Atitlán de la Real Corona", which was in charge of the descendants of the conqueror Sancho de Barahona, on the other hand, the evangelization of the natives was in charge of the Province of Holy Name of Jesus of the Franciscans. After the Independence of Central America in 1821, was in the extensive department of Sololá / Huehuetenango, and in 1838 was part of the ephemeral State of Los Altos until it was reincorporated into the State of Guatemala by the conservative general Rafael Carrera in 1840. After the triumph of the Liberal Reformation of 1871, when said department was considerably reduced by the creation of the department of Quiché on August 12,1872, it was assigned to the department of Sololá. In the 21st century, Hurricane Stan hit Guatemala as a category I hurricane and caused considerable damage to the municipality.
One of its main characteristics is that in the municipality Maximón is worshiped, that is a deity originating from the syncretism between Rijlaj Mam -or Rilaj Maam, the nahual of the tz'utujiles given his condition of colonized town- and Simón Pedro, the apostle of Christ, who wanted to teach the Franciscan friars to the population during the colonial era.
