Santa María Chiquimula is a municipality in the department of Totonicapán of the southwest region of the Republic of Guatemala. In 1820, at the end of the Spanish colony, an indigenous rebellion led by Atanasio Tzul originated in this town against the excessive tributes of the civil and ecclesiastical authorities of the Spanish Crown, but it was repressed by Creole militias, many of them coming from Écija. After the Independence of Central America in 1838, Santa María passed to the State of Los Altos, which was approved by the Congress of the Federal Republic of Central America in that same year.
In the new state there were constant peasant revolts and tension with Guatemala, until that hostilities broke out in 1840, and conservative mestizo general Rafael Carrera not only regained the region for Guatemala but also decisively defeated the president of the Federal Republic of Central America, Honduran Liberal General Francisco Morazán in Guatemala City after the latter invaded Guatemala to try to avenge the liberals of Los Altos. On August 12,1872, when the Liberal Revolution of 1871 had already triumphed six years after the death of General Carrera, the de facto government of the provisional president Miguel García Granados created the new department of Quiché taking a large part of the extensive territories of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango and Sololá / Suchitepéquez. From that moment, Santa María Chiquimula became part of the department of Totonicapán. The municipality has modern sports facilities and celebrates its titular party on January 15 of each year in honor of its patron the Black Christ of Esquipulas.
