Tactic is a municipality in the department of Alta Verapaz located in the region known as subtropical rain forest in the Republic of Guatemala. It is located in an extensive valley, next to high mountains. In the place there is a lot of fog that covers the whole region, causing a very rainy and cold weather, as well as large blizzards. Tactic was colonized peacefully in the process called Capitulaciones de Tezulutlán by Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, O. P. And other Dominican friars, and by July 2,1545, the first baptisms of the town were celebrated.
In 1638, Tactic was one of the towns that formed the Dominican doctrine of the Verapaz, although in 1754, by the Bourbon Reforms, the Dominicans had to hand over their doctrines to the secular clergy, and Tactic became part of a parish. After the Independence of Central America in 1821, Tactic was one of the original municipalities of the State of Guatemala in 1825. It was in the department of Verapaz whose head was Cobán, then, in 1877, it was assigned to the jurisdiction of Alta Verapaz. The Germans formed a new colony in Alta Verapaz at the end of the nineteenth century thanks to generous concessions granted by the liberal presidents Manuel Lisandro Barillas Bercián, José María Reyna Barrios and Manuel Estrada Cabrera. They were organized in a very united and supportive community. In 1892, the husbands Anne and Alfred Percival Maudslay visited Guatemala and traveled through the Verapaz.
They described Tactic as a small village that only served for the travelers who went from Cobán to the port of Panzós, Mrs. Maudslay mentions that Mr. Thomae helped them by telegraphing in advance to reserve a place for them to spend the night, since the town lacked an inn Thomae was at that time the leading German finquero in the area. The German influence lasted in the Verapaz even after the German settlers were strongly affected after the defeats of Germany in the First and Second World War. In 1970 the Transversal Strip of the North was created, and although Tactic was not part of it, it did border on it and was affected when, in the mid-1970s, oil was discovered in the area by the Army and the Army guerrilla. Guerrilla of the Poor faced off in fierce combats, mainly in the department of Quiché.
On May 24,1984, the Head of State, Oscar Humberto Mejía Victores, elevated the municipal head of Tactic to the status of Villa.
