Bella Vista is one of the 122 municipalities in which the Mexican state of Chiapas is divided. The formation of the town was made with the inhabitants of the ranch San Pedro Remate, of the department of Comitán. In 1920, Governor Tiburcio Fernández Ruíz, head of the counterrevolution in Chiapas, through the XXVIII Local Legislature came down to both the Municipality and the town of San Pedro Remate at the level of delegation of the municipality of La Grandeza, and two years later to simple municipal agency. However, with the permission of the authorities of La Grandeza, the Municipality of San Pedro Remate continued with its former category, regularly appointing its authorities. On June 6,1925, in an act of justice, his status as a free Municipality was restored, by order of Carlos A. Vidal, the current ruler.
In this way, San Pedro Remate is joined by the delegations of San Pedro, Los Cimientos and Las Chicharras. They are illustrious personages born in this municipality Ricardo Alfonso Paniagua, politician, and Héctor Eduardo Paniagua, poet. The territorial extension of the municipality is 114.3 km², which is equivalent to 5.37% of the surface of the Sierra region and 0.15% of the state surface. Its altitude is 1,700 meters above sea level. Throughout the municipality there are rugged areas to be found in the Sierra Madre del Sur, however it also has some plains in which are the ejidos of Emiliano Zapata and the Chicharras. The rivers that cross the municipality are: San Pedro, Rinconada, Emiliano Zapata and Tachinula. The climate is semi-warm sub-humid, with a rainfall of 1500 mm per year.
The municipality is geologically constituted by lower Cretaceous terrain with limestone sedimentary rock and the predominant soil types are Acrisol, Andosol and Feosem, its main use is agriculture. The vegetation is oak forest - pine, where there are a variety of species being the most important the following: cypress, pine, romerillo, sabino, chamomile and oak. The municipality counts on a great variety of species, of which the following ones stand out: gavilán golondrio, snake, picamadera, flying squirrel, boar, deer and skunk, among others. In the municipality, San Sebastián is celebrated on January 20, San José on March 19, the coffee fair on April 15, San Marcos on April 25 and San Pedro on June 29. The typical dishes of the municipality are: beans with roasted meat, tree tomato, mole of turkey and rice.
Although the municipality does not have many tourist attractions, it is necessary to point out that it has great beauty in its landscapes. The most important celebrations are: San Sebastián, San José, San Marcos and San Pedro Apóstol.
