More information about Guadalajara

Guadalajara is a city and Spanish municipality, located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula. It is the capital of the homonymous province, in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. It is located on a hill on the left bank of the valley of the river Henares in the highest part of the southern plateau, between the regions of La Alcarria and the Campiña del Henares. The city was founded on an accused eminence of land, between two deep ravines, that of Alamín and that of Coquín or San Antonio, which brought their waters from the nearby Alcarreña plateau to the Henares. The height of the city above sea level is 708 meters measured in the main square.

The climate is continentalized Mediterranean, with long and cold winters, and short and very hot summers. The annual average of temperatures is in 13.1°C and the one of precipitations in more than 400 l / m². With a population of 84 145 inhabitants, it is the second most populated city of the autonomous community after Albacete. The municipality has an area of 235.51 km² and a population density of 355.11 inhabitants / km². The city of Guadalajara was founded by the Arabs, between the 8th and 9th century. From that time it is believed that its name comes from the Andalusian Arabic "wād al-ḥaŷarah" given to the river Henares. In its vicinity there had been a Roman site, whose name, Arriaca, can have the same meaning.

The city reached certain splendor in the 10th century, despite its situation in a territory that was almost always on the warpath. In 1085, Guadalajara was conquered by the king of León Alfonso VI, attributed this fact to Alvar Fáñez de Minaya, and from that moment until the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212 the history of the city reflects the course of the wars against the Almoravids and Almohads In 1133 King Alfonso VII grants the first jurisdiction to the population to regulate the life of their community, establishing a set of rules, rights and privileges and in 1219, Fernando III extends it granting the long standing to the city Later, the protection of King Alfonso X ensured the economic development of the population, through the defense of its merchants and the authorization of its fairs and markets.

In the second half of the fourteenth century, the family of the Mendoza family settled in Guadalajara, and with their subsequent promotion they brought with them the family of the city. In 1460, King Henry IV granted the town the title of city. Throughout the sixteenth century a boom era was achieved. The general crisis of the seventeenth century affected especially Guadalajara that with the departure of the Mendoza to Madrid and with bankruptcy and depopulation the continuity of the city was in question. At the beginning of the eighteenth century and after being sacked during the War of Succession, the city lives its worst moment. To try to curb this situation, Felipe V establishes the Royal Cloth Factory in the city, which until the beginning of the 19th century ensures the growth of the population.

The damage caused by the War of Independence and the closure of the Royal Cloth Factory in 1822 caused a new decline in the city, and from then on, until the second half of the 20th century, the city survived thanks to its administrative function, as capital of the province and headquarters of institutions such as the Academy of Military Engineers or the Diputación de Guadalajara The growth, although slow, transforms the population, which reaches 11,000 inhabitants in 1900. The lack of industrial development limited well into the 20th century the possibilities of the city. As in most of the country, the Civil War and the post-war period were very difficult times. In 1959, Guadalajara was included in the development plans as a industrial decongestion industrial estate in Madrid, which caused significant growth rates in the city and the so-called Henares Corridor.
