More information about Toro

Toro is a municipality and Spanish city belonging to the province of Zamora, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. Its term is located to the southeast of the province of Zamora, in full vega of the Duero, to about 33 km of Zamora, the provincial capital. It has a total area of 325 km², a fact that places this municipality as the largest area of its province, occupying just over 3% of its territory, and one of the largest in Castilla y León.

Administratively it is formed by the nucleus that gives it its name, Toro, and by a series of settlements of different character, such as the small rural nucleus, with neighborhood treatment, called Tagarabuena, the urbanization called El Gejo, and six minor settlements such as The Station, Montelareina, Farm Florence, Villaveza, Villaguer and Estancia Piedra. Toro is a historical and monumental city. The city is a reflection of its remarkable historical role, of special relevance between the 12th and 16th centuries, in which it was the royal seat and venue of the Cortes. Its historic center hosts authentic monumental gems, among which the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor stands out. In its streets you can see the imbrication of different stages of its historical development, still being traceable and the key elements of the foundational urban structure, together with that of other later stages of its development.

Another of the key elements in the configuration of its urban structure is its location on a significant orographic accident, consisting of a considerable elevation of the land and its location close to the Duero. The city exerts a remarkable function of county head on a rural area surrounding 19 municipalities, the so-called Alfoz de Toro, of which 13 are located north of the Douro River and 6 to the south. Due to its size, it is an intermediate nucleus, with a significant population volume for the average of Castile and Leon and that contributes decisively with its more than 9,000 inhabitants to approximate the regional density to which it exists in the regional set, fulfilling its role head of the district of its functional area. The Douro River is configured as the central element of the relief and the morphology of the municipality, crossing the border from east to west.

The river has exerted a spectacular drainage of the territory of its wide valley, that in some points can surpass the 6 km of width, determining its particular physiognomy of terraces, hillsides, gorges and bottoms of valley. The municipality extends above and below the river, with land mainly covered with vineyards, which has generated a high quality wine culture that has been protected with the Toro Denomination of Origin. Although its land has a high occupation by agricultural activities, the municipal territory has important protected areas that include a place of community importance, a cataloged wetland and a forest of public utility.
