More information about Cowes

Cowes, sometimes called West Cowes, is an English port of the village and civil parish of the same name on the Isle of Wight, an island south of Southampton. Cowes is located on the west bank of the mouth of the Medina River in front of the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two cities are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry. Leland, in the nineteenth century, describes them poetically as the cities "The two great Cowes that in loud Thunder ROAR, This on the eastern, that the western shore". Cowes Castle is the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Squadron.

The city hosts one of the oldest sporting events in the world, Cowes Week, which is held annually during the first week of August and includes the Admiral's Cup and its legendary Fastnet Race. The population, of 9,663 inhabitants in the 2001 census and 10,405 in the 2011 census, doubles during that week. Much of the architecture of the city is still strongly influenced by the ornate building style popularized by Prince Albert of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha. The former royal residence of the Osborne Castle, used by Albert and his wife Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, is located east of the city.
