Despite being inhabited since prehistory, as attested by the numerous archaeological sites discovered in the city, it was not until the arrival of the Phoenicians, who built the Temple of Hercules on Sancti Petri Island and introduced such important activities for the city as salting, when a population nucleus settled on the island. From the arrival of this town, which founded the city of Cádiz, begins the dependency of San Fernando in the capital of the province.
