Mareeba is a town in northern Queensland, Australia at the confluence of Barron River, Granite Creek and Emerald Creek. The name of the city is of aboriginal origin and means the "meeting of waters". Before the arrival of Europeans, the region was inhabited by Muluridji Aborigines. On May 26,1875, James Venture Mulligan became the first European to visit the future Mareeba site as he sailed along the eastern shore of the Barron River and crossed its two tributaries. The first European to settle in the area was John Atherton, who with his cattle, settled just north of the city. Then the city became a relay point for vehicles going from Port Douglas to Herberton.
When the train arrived at Mareeba in 1893, the city could live normally. Mareeba is known for its horticultural crops: avocados, mangoes, lychees, longans, cashews, pineapple but also sugar cane, tea, coffee and many other tropical fruits and vegetables. Tobacco is endangered except for contraband. There are also poultry and livestock farms. From 1942 to 1945, as many as 10,000 Australians and Americans occupied the area when the airport served as a center for the battles of New Guinea and the Pacific. The Americans named Hoevet Field at the airport in honor of Major Dean Carol "Pinky" Hoevet who was killed on August 16,1942.
