More information about Picton

Picton is a town in New South Wales, Australia, 80 km west of Sydney at the foot of the Southern Highlands. The Picton area was first explored by Europeans in 1798 and remained beyond the limits of permitted colonization until 1821. After the discovery of good land in the region and the European settlement of the Bong Bong regions and Goulburn, Governor Lachlan Macquarie authorized the construction of the new "Great South Road" between Sydney and the Southern Highlands in 1819. This opening permitted the installation of the first settlers at Picton, including Henry Antill Colden, who established his property there.1822.

Picton developed when a new route of the Great Southern Highway cutting through the Razorback Range from Camden was opened and especially after the arrival of railroad in 1863. Picton is the only city in the hemisphere South that we cross twice when traveling by train. The place was called Stonequarry in 1841 and renamed Picton in 1845. The village remains a stopping point on the Great Southern Highway, later renamed Hume Highway, until a diversion is brought into service in the years 1970. Bushfires destroyed several houses in the Nangarin area on the eastern outskirts of Picton in September 2006.
