Suffolk County

Suffolk is a county of the American state of New York, located in the metropolitan area of New York, in Long Island, in the extreme southeast corner of that state. In the year 2000, the population of the county was 1,419,369 people. It was named like this, in honor of the homonymous county of England, where its first settlers came from. The county seat is Riverhead, although many county government offices are located in Hauppauge on the western tip of Suffolk, where most of its population is concentrated. There are also offices in Smithtown, where the County Assembly, Yaphank and Farmingville are located.

Together, Nassau and Suffolk counties are referred to by area residents as "Long Island," to differentiate them from the New York and Queens boroughs of Brooklyn, which are located on the western tip of the island. Geographically, Suffolk County is the easternmost location, both in the state and the New York metropolitan area.
