The name of the county comes from the old Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Essex founded in the year 500 d. C.

And that occupied a territory that extended from the River Thames to the Lee River. Due to the proximity of the county to the city of London, many of the towns of Essex are "dormitory cities". Some low cost airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet have their base in this airport. It was built during World War II and served as an operational base for British bombers.

Southend Airport is also operational, from where easyJet operates international flights. The University of Essex, famous for its social sciences, robotics and other disciplines schools, is located in Wivenhoe Park, in the vicinity of Colchester.
