It is located in the north of the country and is the second largest city in Swaziland with a population of 61,794 inhabitants. It is located 23 km south of the Oshoek border with South Africa, northwest of the country. It is located in the Mdimba Mountains on the banks of the Mbabane River at an altitude of 1,200 meters. It grew in the 19th century around the residence of King Mbandzeni and developed as an administrative capital during the British dependency between 1903 and 1968 after the administrative capital was moved from Manzini.
Mbabane was until the time of the independence of Swaziland from Great Britain in 1968 the capital of the old homonymous district. It is the administrative and commercial center of the entire region. There are mines of iron ore and tin in the area. In 1964 a railway line with Mozambique was inaugurated with the aim of being able to export the iron ore that is produced. This production has practically ceased since the end of the 70s. Mbabane is the headquarters of the Waterford-KaMhlaba University integrated into the United World College network of South Africa. Although the main language is Swazi, the use of English is common for business and administrative procedures. The city and the country thrive thanks to tourism and the export of sugar.
