Blantyre or preferably and recommended by the RAE Blantire is the second largest city in Malawi, with an estimated population of 728,285 inhabitants, located on the banks of the Shire River, near Zomba. It is the administrative center of the district of Blantyre and the southern region, and the main commercial and industrial center, from which the trade and transport of the Shire highlands is channeled. It is the seat of a presidential palace, the Sankija palace, and the Superior Court of Appeal, has several technical schools and the University of Malawi. In the area, mainly tobacco, corn, wheat, coffee, and tung are grown, from which oil is extracted.

It was founded in 1876 by Scottish missionaries, and named after the hometown of Scottish explorer David Livingstone. Blantyre became a municipality in 1895 and in 1956 it joined that of Limbe to form the municipality of Blantyre-Limbe. In 1966 it acquired the category of city.
