Pottery and pottery in Mexico have their roots in the pre-Columbian period, with the first cultures and civilizations of Mesoamerica. With some exception, the prehispanic vases were not glazed, but polished and painted with slips. The potter's wheel was unknown. The pieces were made by means of molds, colombin and other methods. After the Spanish conquest, European techniques and designs were introduced and mixed with native traditions. Indigenous traditions survive on a few ceramic items such as comales. Pottery is produced from basic elements such as dishes, kitchen utensils to new objects, such as sculptures and Mexican folk art. Despite the outstanding of these elements, most ceramic articles produced in the country are ceramic floor and wall tiles, along with bathroom accessories.

Mexico has a series of famous ceramic craft traditions, most of which are found in the center and south of the country. Some examples are the Talavera poblana, the majolica of Guanajuato, the different vessels of the Guadalajara area, and the black mud from Oaxaca. A more recent one is the production of pots and bowls from Mata Ortiz ceramics in Chihuahua. Although the number of artisans has been decreasing due to the competition of mass-produced articles, the elaboration of popular and consumer art, still has an important role in the Mexican economy and the production of ceramics in general is still important for Mexican culture.
