Barra de Navidad or Puerto de la Navidad, is a town located in the state of Jalisco. It was a Spanish shipyard located in the municipality of Cihuatlán, Jalisco at the time of the conquest and of the first Spanish explorations towards the South Sea. Many Spanish expeditions departed from the Puerto de Navidad or Astillero de Navidad towards the North Pacific and towards the Philippines. At present the population is more modern. Captain Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's naval expedition sailed from the same port on his voyage of exploration towards the North Pacific, a trip in which the captain and explorer Cabrillo died as a result of a quarrel he had with the Californios Indians, that trip culminated in the discovery of the coasts of the present state of California.
