Huaraz or Huarás, founded as San Sebastián de Huaraz on January 20,1574, is a Peruvian city, capital of the homonymous district and province of the department of Ancash. Its metropolitan area covers part of the districts of Huaraz and Independencia and is located south of the Callejón de Huaylas, at an average altitude of 3050 meters above sea level. It has an approximate area of 9 km² and an estimated population of 120,000 inhabitants by 2019, which positions it as the second most populated city in the department, and within the 25 most populated cities in the country. The origins of the city go back to pre-Inca times, with the development of the first human settlements around the Quilcay and Santa rivers.
Its Spanish foundation was carried out in 1574 as a reduction of Indians During the independence of Peru, the city hosted and supplied the liberating army with military equipment and materials, thus earning the emblematic name of "The very noble and generous city of Huaraz "given by the liberator Simón Bolívar. In 1970,95% of the city was destroyed by the earthquake that devastated the Ancash region in which approximately 20,000 Huaracinos died, for this reason and after the deployment of the international collaboration that was given for the relief of the victims, it received the name of Capital of International Friendship. This natural event completely re-configured the socio-economic distribution of the city, which is currently shaped, in large part, by migrant families from different towns within the department and from other departments. The economic activity of Huaraz is based on mining, agriculture, commerce and tourism, the latter being the most important economic source of the city.
A large percentage of the Huarazina infrastructure is dedicated to tourist activities, making the city an important point of arrival for adventure and high mountain sportsmen in the snow-covered mountains of the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Huayhuash, as well as for the routes to the archaeological complexes of Chavín de Huántar, Huilcahuaín and all the Eastern Sierra de Áncash.
