Pinillos is a Colombian municipality located in the department of Bolívar, on the island of Santa Bárbara in the extensive region known as Momposina Depression. The municipal seat is located on the right bank of the Magdalena River two kilometers from the mouth of the Cauca River in said river. It limits the north with the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Mompox and San Fernando, to the south with the Municipalities of Tiquisio and Achí, to the east with the municipalities of Altos del Rosario and Barranco de Loba and to the west with Magangué. Due to its geographical position, in a floodplain, a large part of the municipality of Pinillos is surrounded by swamps.
Its climate is warm tropical with an average temperature of 32º C. The economic activities of Pinillos are agriculture, livestock and fishing. Its roadways are through the shacks on the banks of the Magdalena River. Currently you can reach the corregimientos by motorcycle, in summer time. During the winter and floods communication is through rivers, canyons and swamps that run through the municipal territory. The town of Pinillos was founded on the banks of Loba's arm on October 23,1842 by Messrs. José María Porto, Baltasar Rangel, Francisco Alfaro and Tomás Gil, who came at the head of a wave of peasant settlers from Mompós and other places of the momposina depression. The incipient town was given the name of 'Pueblo Nuevo' and its lots and streets traced by a Barranquilla topographer surnamed Ruiz.
Pueblo Nuevo grew rapidly and managed to be erected as a parish in 1846 by the then Bishop of Cartagena, Juan Fernández de Sotomayor and Picón. On January 1,1846, Bishop Fernández de Sotomayor sang mass at the place and proposed changing his name to Pinillos, in honor of the philanthropist Pedro Martínez de Pinillos, founder of the Pinillos de Mompós School and whom he met while he was a priest of Mompós at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The parish of Pinillos was growing more and more so it was elevated to District on October 23,1848 by Order of the Provincial Assembly of Mompós. By 1851 Pinillos had 526 inhabitants, which twenty years later had multiplied to 2042 inhabitants and to 4233 in 1881. Of the municipality of Pinillos Manuel Francisco Obregón, three times Governor of Bolívar, was natural.
