More information about Sacapulas

Sacapulas is a municipality in the department of Quiché, in the Republic of Guatemala. After being an important town in pre-Columbian times, it was part of the Tezulutlán region where numerous indigenous people barricaded themselves to resist the Spanish conquest. When Spaniards and indigenous Tlaxcalans and Cholulans invaded Guatemala in the 1520s, the Sacapaulas region and other Ixil and Uspantek indigenous villages resisted the conquest for several years thanks to their location in the Cuchumatanes mountains and the ferocity of their warriors. After several years of defeating the Spanish conquest attempts, they were finally defeated in December 1530, and the surviving warriors were marked as slaves in punishment for their prolonged resistance.

On July 6,1539, the friar Bartolomé de las Casas, OP obtained the authorization of the Viceroy of Mexico, Antonio de Mendoza, so that the natives of Tezulutlan, when they were conquered, would not be entrusted to them but would be vassals of the Crown. Then, Las Casas, Fray Luis de Cáncer, Fray Rodrigo de Ladrada and Fray Pedro de Angulo, OP took part in the project of reduction and pacification, and Luis de Cáncer was received by the cacique of Sacapulas, making the first baptisms of the inhabitants After two years of effort, the reduction system began to have relative success, as the Indians moved to more accessible lands and towns were founded in the Spanish way. The name "Tierra de Guerra" was replaced by "Vera Paz", a name that became official in 1547. The Spanish crown focused on the catechization of the indigenous people.

The congregations founded by the royal missionaries in the New World were called "Indian doctrines" or simply "doctrines." In 1638, the Dominicans separated their great doctrines into groups centered on their six convents and Sacapulas was one of them. This convent was in force until 1754, when regular orders were forced to hand over their possessions to the secular clergy. After the independence of Central America in 1821 the Central American Civil War began between the conservatives who wanted to maintain the power of the regular orders and the liberals who wanted to expel them, which they achieved in 1829, after the overthrow of the conservative governor Mariano de Aycinena y Piñol and the defeat of the Aycinena Clan. After the return of the conservatives to power in 1840, the regular orders returned to Guatemala, but they did not recover their former properties, and after the triumph of the Liberal Reformation in 1871, the regular clergy was again expelled from the country.

At that time, the de facto president, Miguel García Granados, decided to create the department of Quiché to improve the territorial administration of the Republic, given the enormous size of the territory of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango and Sololá / Suchitepéquez. August 12,1872 Sacapulas became part of the new department of Quiché. During the Civil War in Guatemala, Sacapulas was immersed in the radius of action of the Guerrilla Army of the Poor, one of the guerrilla organizations operating in Guatemala that justified their attacks against private property and the State, arguing that they affected, on the one hand, the economic interests of the State and the productive sectors, and on the other, that violated the Army. The EGP carried out several acts of violence that affected the infrastructure and services in Sacapulas as part of its global objective of causing total lack of control and the pre-insurrection in the country in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

However, To counteract this, the government of Fernando Romeo Lucas García initiated the "Tierra Arrasada" offensive in the region where the Guerrilla Army of the Poor operated, in the area of Sacapulas, Chajul, Nebaj and Ixcán in El Quiché -the oil region and fertile of the Northern Transversal Strip.
