San Bartolomé Milpas Altas is a municipality of the department of Sacatepéquez of the south-western region of the Republic of Guatemala. The municipality is the smallest that has not only the department of Sacatepéquez but also the Republic of Guatemala being only one km² more small than Magdalena Milpas Altas, with only 8 km². The titular celebration and of the employer San Bartolomé Apostle is celebrated generally from the 22 to the 24 of August, being this last main day. The predominant indigenous language is K'akch'ikel. During the colonial era, the area occupied by the town was donated to the Dominican friars, who founded a doctrine in the place.
This doctrine remained until the friars had to deliver their reductions to the secular clergy in 1754. After the Independence of Central America in 1821, the State of Guatemala established circuits and districts for the administration of justice through jury trials in 1825 and the San Bartolomé and San Mateo Milpas Altas towns were included in the Antigua circuit in District Nº8. By administrative agreement of March 14,1833, the San Mateo Milpas Altas village was annexed to the municipality, which passed to Santa Lucía Milpas Alpas in 1935 and finally to the municipality of Antigua Guatemala.
On May 10,2017 the tranquility of the town was severely affected when the National Civil Police conducted a raid on a private residence and discovered that it was used as a base for a group of gang members who not only organized extortion but also had a clandestine cemetery in the backyard.
