Ixcán is a municipality in the northern part of the department of Quiché in the Republic of Guatemala, specifically in the oil region of the Transversal Strip of the North. It has an extension of 1575 square kilometers and its municipal seat is Playa Grande. The majority of its inhabitants belong to different indigenous ethnic groups that arrived in the region after the creation of the Northern Transversal Strip in 1970. Previously, it was an inhospitable region far from the urban centers, because what had not been populated. In fact, when the limits were made with Mexico between 1882 and 1896, hundreds of deaths of workers of the Guatemalan Boundary Commission were reported, due to the insalubriousness of the region.

After the Independence of Central America in 1825, the Assembly of the State of Guatemala divided the territories of the country and assigned Ishcán - as it was then called - to the department of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango and to the circuit of Jacaltenango in District No.9 for the teaching of justice by jury trial.
