Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán is a municipality in the department of Sololá of the south-western region of the Republic of Guatemala. During the colonial era it was part of the village of Totonicapán and after the Independence of Central America in 1821, it became part of the department of Sololá / Suchitepéquez and was in the district of Sololá for the delivery of justice. In 1838 it was among the towns that formed the State of Los Altos that was segregated from the State of Guatemala by initiative of the liberal creoles of the region. But on October 1,1839, a revolt against the indigenous tax in the new state broke out in Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán and was violently suppressed.
The indigenous people of the town, inflamed, went to the conservative government of Guatemala to complain, and received the support of the strong man of the regime, the mestizo general Rafael Carrera, Carrera regained the Estado de los Altos by force in 1840, and since then he has remained in Guatemala. After the Liberal Revolution of 1871 occurred six years after the death of General Carrera, the Liberals regained power in Guatemala, and on August 12,1872, they separated the extensive department of Sololá / Suchitepéquez creating the new department of Quiché with the districts of the Sierra and Quiché. On the other hand, Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán passed to the department of Totonicapán, and later it was definitively awarded to the department of Sololá in 1883. In 1998, the municipal capital was severely affected by hurricane Mitch, forcing the transfer to the Nueva Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán. However, in 2005, Storm Stan demonstrated the vulnerability of the new settlement.
