Apizaco is a Mexican city, municipal seat and main city of the homonymous municipality, located in the center of the state of Tlaxcala. With 49,506 inhabitants in 2010 according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, it is the third most populated city in the state of Tlaxcala preceded by San Pablo del Monte and Huamantla. The metropolitan region of Apizaco was the largest urban area of Tlaxcala covering 370 square kilometers and grouped a total of eight municipalities in the year 2000.
In 2005 the metropolitan areas of Tlaxcala and Apizaco were merged, creating the metropolitan region of Tlaxcala- Apizaco, the latter being the most populated city in that area, the exact tracings of the central streets of Apizaco have caused it to be called "model city". Due to its industrial, economic, commercial and tourist development, it is considered the second most important city in the state, just behind Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl, the state capital, relatively close to the industrial corridor of San Cosme Xaloztoc, and the City. Industrial Xicohtencal I located in Tetla, which has made private investment and the establishment of transnational companies in the city, is considered the nerve center of the state. The first settlers of Apizaco go back more than 10,000 to 12,000 years, by nomadic hunters. In the period of the Spanish conquest several towns were founded around, such as San Luis Apizaco -now San Luis Apizaquito- in 1543. It is from this town that Apizaco took its current name.
The foundation of the city dates back to the 18th century, when Apizaco was no more than a railroad camp, so there is no precise date of its foundation, however, it was taken on March 1,1866 when Guillermo Lloyd delivered the report on the advancement of railway works, and English workers, responsible for the construction of rail lines, had settled in the camp, arguing to these the founders of Apizaco. In the 150th anniversary of its founding in 2016, The congress of the state of Tlaxcala declared the city as the state capital for a day. The city is located in the central area of the municipality of Apizaco, in the Centro-Norte-Apizaco region according to the economic and social council of the state of Tlaxcala, also called Llanos y Lomeríos del centro. It is only 20 km from Tlaxcala. Xicohténcatl, 59 km from the city of Puebla and 135 km from Mexico City.
