Calpulalpan officially as Heroic City of Calpulalpan, is a Mexican city, head and main urban center of the homonymous municipality, located to the west of the state of Tlaxcala. With 33 263 inhabitants in 2010 according to the population and housing census conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, it is the sixth most populous city in the state. It has an estimated population of 37,752 inhabitants for 2017, according to the National Population Council. Calpulalpan was an indigenous town and place of passage for the pochteca merchants who were heading to the great Tenochtitlán. In pre-Hispanic times it belonged to the Texcoco kingdom. Prior to the conquest of Mexico, the city was called Calpollalpan, a name derived from the Nahuatl language.
In 1560, the Spaniards built the convents of San Simón and San Judas. In 1608, it was consolidated as a Spanish town with the name of San Antonio Calpulalpan, in 1937, it was elevated to the category of city by decree number 13 of May 21,1937, for October 16,2015 it is renamed by the decree number 142 receiving the title of Heroic, proclaiming itself as "Heroic City of Calpulalpan" in recognition of the actions undertaken in its territory, in the battle of April 10,1867 against the French army.
On January 3,1863 during the French Intervention, the Federal Secretary of the Interior sent an order to the Governor of the Federal District for the municipality of Capulalpan to be incorporated into the District of Tlaxcala belonging to the District of Texcoco, which was executed on the condition of its reincorporation once the war is over. Calpulalpan was not reinstated so on October 14,1870, the government of the state of Mexico requested his reinstatement, which led to a series of negotiations by which on July 29,1871 the state government of Mexico cedes the territory of Calpulapan To the state of Tlaxcala, the congress of Tlaxcala established that date as a state party commemorating the annexation of Calpulalpan, in 2016 the 142nd anniversary of this event was celebrated, declaring the city's capital as the only day for the city. The city is located in the central area of the municipality of Calpulalpan, in the Poniente-Calpulalpan economic region designated by the economic and social council of the state of Tlaxcala, and in the geographic region of the Apam and Pied Grande Plains.
