Agustín Cosme Damián de Iturbide and Arámburu, known as Agustín de Iturbide or Agustín I was a Mexican soldier and politician. During the first stages of the war for the independence of Mexico, Iturbide militated in the realistic army fighting the insurgents. Later, during the framework of the liberal triennium in Spain, he was appointed commander to fight Vicente Guerrero, leader of the rebels in the Sierra Madre del Sur. With ideology opposed to the implementation of the Constitution of Cádiz, decided to agree with the insurgent forces. He proclaimed the Plan of Iguala on February 24,1821. He presided over the regency of the first Mexican provisional government. On May 18,1822, he was proclaimed emperor and crowned two months later with the name of Agustín I. In December of 1822, Antonio López de Santa Anna proclaimed the Plan of Veracruz, causing the former insurgents of republican ideas and dissatisfied with the imperial regime will rise up in arms. In February 1823, the Casa Mata Plan was signed, as a result, the Bourbons and Republicans joined forces to support the overthrow of Iturbide. The emperor decided to abdicate in March 1823 and went into exile in Europe.
During his absence, the Mexican Congress, previously reinstated by Agustín I, declared him "traitor and outlawed in case he appears in Mexican territory, declaring him a public enemy of the State, and anyone who helps him on his return.» Iturbide, without knowing this resolution, returned to Mexico in July 1824 to warn the government about a conspiracy to reconquer Mexico. Upon disembarking in Tamaulipas, he was arrested and later executed by a firing squad. In 1838, his mortal remains were moved to Mexico City and buried with honors in the Chapel of San Felipe de Jesús in the Metropolitan Cathedral, where they are exhibited in a glass urn. Its name in association with the national flag, was preserved for a long time in a stanza of the original lyrics of the National Anthem of Mexico, which was suppressed in 1943. Paradoxically, the saber that Iturbide used during the entrance parade of the Trigarante Army Mexico City, was placed in the hall of Congress along with the names written in gold letters of the insurgents who had fought.
