Campeche

Campeche, officially called Free State and Sovereign of Campeche is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, form the United Mexican States. Its capital and most populated city is San Francisco de Campeche. It is located in the Yucatan peninsula, southeast region of the country, bordering the north and northeast with Yucatan, east with Quintana Roo, southeast with Belize, south with Guatemala, west with the Gulf of Mexico and southwest with Tabasco. With 899 931 inhabitants in 2015, it is the third least populated state - ahead of Baja California Sur and Colima, the least populated - and with 14.20 hab / km², the fourth least densely populated - ahead of Chihuahua, Durango and Baja Southern California, the least densely populated.

It was founded on April 29,1863. From the physical point of view, Campeche is in a transitional position between the Guatemalan Petén rainforest and the deciduous lowland jungle of the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. There are several theories about the origin of the word Campeche. Others indicate that Campeche is derived from the words kin meaning sun and pech, as already indicated, tick. Some suppose that to this name it is possible to be added the prefix ah that means place and altogether it would say "place of Mr. Sun tick".
