There are evidence of settlements of the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age and the First Iron Age on the hill of Castillo and on the hill of San Miguel, reliefs from which the city and the valley of Arlanzón is dominated.

However, it is considered that the city was founded as such by the count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos in the year 884. Towards the year 930 it became the capital of the county of Castile, first dependent on the kingdom of León and independent after acting by Count Fernán González. It was the capital of the kingdom of Castile, and intermittently of the Crown of Castile, from 1230 until the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. These dictated in the city in 1512 the Laws of Burgos, the first laws that the Hispanic Monarchy applied in America to organize its conquest, base of the current human rights, later it was the capital of the old historical region of Old Castile, and It was also the first provisional capital of the autonomous community of Castilla y León.

It was also the capital of Spain from April 1 to October 18,1939. It has an extensive peripheral green ring, two linear parks around the two main rivers that cross it and a large monumental complex, among which the Santa Maria cathedral, an exponent of Gothic architecture declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, extended the historic center in 2014, the abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas and the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores. In addition, the city is crossed by the Camino de Santiago, another World Heritage Site and is less than 15 km from Atapuerca, also under the protection of UNESCO since 2000. On July 13,2010, the Museum of Human Evolution opened its doors in the city, exposing the most important fossils found in the site.

It is currently among the ten most visited museums in the country. The city experienced heavy industrialization in the twentieth century, mainly around the automotive sector and the food, both by local entrepreneurs and foreign investment, favored by the implementation during the Franco Polo Development. Its privileged geographic location, approximately in the center of the northern half of the peninsula, has allowed it to become an important hub of communications in the north of Spain, both national and international routes. It has a diverse educational offer led by the University of Burgos, which has more than 7,000 students, which stands out for the research quality and the relationship with the business world. It houses the headquarters of the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla y León and of the Castilian and Leonés Institute of the Language.

Burgos is host to several international events such as the Congress of iRedes social networks, and national as ForoBurgos days, about the economic and business sector, or fashion show of Castilla y Leon. In recent years the city has been immersed in various projects, such as the total urbanization of the Boulevard del Ferrocarril, which, with about 12 km in length, is one of the longest avenues in Europe, crossing much of the city of this to the west following the redeveloped layout of the eliminated train tracks. Burgos was the Spanish capital of gastronomy in 2013.
