Pamplona is a municipality and Spanish city, capital of the Autonomous Community of Navarra. Pamplona is located in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, and in the center of the Pamplona basin. It extends to both banks of the Arga River and through it there are two other rivers, the Elorz and the Sadar. During the first half of the 9th century, the local nobility, with the alliance of the Banu Qasi family, achieved the consolidation of an independent power nucleus led by Íñigo Arista, who turned Pamplona into the capital of the Kingdom of Pamplona and during the Age Media, in the Kingdom of Navarre. In 1423 Carlos III of Navarre dictated the Privilege of the Union that unified the three towns of Pamplona in a unique city, and from where its name in Basque language "Iruña" derived from this union of the "three good ones". In 1512 it was occupied by the troops sent by Fernando the Catholic, with the definitive defeat in 1521, and that along with the peninsular part of the old navarro kingdom was annexed in the Spanish Crown. The majority of Basque nationalism considers it also the historical capital of Euskal Herria. Its historical and monumental heritage, as well as various celebrations that take place throughout the year, make it a city that receives national and international tourism.

Sanfermines stand out, of international fame, filling their streets with thousands of strangers from all over the world. The celebrations begin with the launching of the chupinazo from the balcony of the town hall at midday on July 6, and end at midnight on July 14 with the Pobre de mí, a farewell song. Its worldwide fame is a recent phenomenon, also linked to the dissemination given by Ernest Hemingway with his novel Fiesta. Among its most representative monuments are the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the church of San Saturnino, the church of San Nicolás, the Ciudadela or the Chamber of Comptos, all of them declared of Cultural Interest. It is the financial and commercial center of Navarra, as well as an administrative center. As the capital of the Community, the public function is an important source of employment.

It is also an important nucleus of industrial activity, construction materials, metallurgy, paper and graphic arts and processed meat. The Volkswagen automobile company, located in the Landaben industrial estate, is the industry that generates the most jobs in the Pamplona basin, with an approximate workforce of 5000 workers in 2009. It also highlights the commercial activity, both wholesale and retail. The city has two universities: the Public University of Navarre and the University of Navarra. The first, founded in 1987, had 7276 students in the 2007-08 academic year and is listed as the 28th university in Spain by number of students according to the classification of the newspaper El Mundo. The second, founded in 1952, is owned by private property and its ownership and management correspond to Opus Dei.

In the 2007-08 academic year, it had 13,490 students and is listed as the 8th in Spain, as well as a center of the National University of Distance Education.
