Chat in Soto del Barco

Soto del Barco is an Asturian council located on the Cantabrian coast, being one of the smallest in Asturias. It is located on the right bank of the mouth of the Nalón River and is part of the Mancomunidad de las Cinco Villas. It limits to the north with the Cantabrian sea, to the south with the councils of Candamo and Pravia, to the east with Castrillón and to the west with the Nalón river, that makes of limit with Pravia and Walls of Nalón. It covers a total area of ​​40.23 km2, and houses a population of 3940 inhabitants in 2016, mainly concentrated in the towns of San Juan de La Arena and the capital, Soto del Barco.

It owes its name to an old boat used to communicate, in past times, the two banks of the Nalón estuary, before any bridge was built. It has a good communicative network, crossing the council the national N-632, which goes from east to west, as well as the autonomous AS-16, in the direction of Cornellana where it joins the N-634. It also has a rail service, thanks to the Ferrol-Gijón railway line operated by RENFE-FEVE. Geologically speaking, the land of Soto del Barco belongs mostly to the Devonian, with an abundance of limestone mixed with different materials such as clays, giving this situation especially in its western part. In the areas near the mouth, the river suffers the strong tides of the sea, presenting a much slower course than in other parts of its course.

From the orographic point of view, Soto del Barco is characterized by the softness of its relief, not showing large elevations or slopes of mention. The almost totality of the territory belongs to a flat and smooth surface known as rasa that occurs on an approximate height of one hundred meters and losing such condition in its southern part, where we can find elevations somewhat more pronounced as those of the Sierra de Mafalla, in the border with Candamo, and that of Fontebona on its border with Pravia. It is in this where is the maximum height of the council with the 467 meters of the height of the Crown. Its coastal strip is occupied by the Los Quebrantos sandy area and by an abrupt rocky cliff.

The right bank of the Nalón is much softer and less steep than its western part, situating in it the two most important population centers of the municipality, Soto del Barco and San Juan de la Arena. The main fluvial accident, as it is possible to be supposed, is the river Nalón, that forms mouth in the western part of the council. In these last stretches of its exit to the sea it develops meanders in a zigzag shape between alluviums that fill the smooth surface of the old estuary, forming some islets such as Arcubín. Al Nalón flows waters of various streams and streams from the mountains of Mafalla and Fontebona. Another river that runs through the council and empties directly into the sea is the Ferrería. Its climate is, like all the Cantabrian coastal strip, mild, temperate and humid, presenting an average temperature of 9°C in winter and 17°C in its summer season.

One of the greatest singularities that the weather on the council presents is the presence of marine mists, favored by the amphitheater of the highlands. Of its vegetation it is necessary to indicate that the council presents / displays an abundance of plants determined by very diverse causes like the maritime currents, the humidity in the atmosphere, very favorable for the presence of inferior plants, as well as the current of the river that transports seeds of vegetables from the mountains. Its animal life does not present many peculiarities, being the most outstanding fauna of the river and sea where we can find various species such as trout, eels, lampreys and perhaps what most characterized the council, although increasingly in smaller quantity, and that is the presence of angula.
