Since then it has declined, due to the loss of most of the heavy industry.

The foundries were opened in Llwydcoed and Abernant in 1799 and 1800 respectively, followed by others in Gadlys and Aberaman in 1827 and 1847. These stopped working since 1875. After this, the metallurgical industry was represented by sheet metal works, but for this At that time the economy of the city was dominated by the coal industry. There were also several brick kilns and breweries. During the second half of the 19th century, various improvements were made to the town's public works, which became, in spite of its neighboring coal factories, a pleasant place to live.
