Edwinstowe is a village in the heart of Sherwood Forest, north of Nottinghamshire, England. Its name means Edwin's resting place because the body of the king and saint Edwin of Northumbria was hidden in the church after being killed in battle of Hatfield Chase in the fall of 633. References to Edwinstowe can be found in the Domesday Book. In 1066 "Edenstou" was a royal land of the Saxon king of Mansfield. In 1086 Edenstou had no more than a church attended by a priest and four slaves who worked their land, located deep in the Sherwood Royal Forest, about 20 miles long by 7 wide. Legend has it that Robin Hood married his girlfriend Maid Marian in the Church of St. Mary.
