It is known as the "Hillsborough Tragedy" to the event that occurred on Saturday, April 15,1989 at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, in which 96 people were crushed against the fences of the stadium because of an avalanche. The event took place during the football match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, corresponding to the semifinals of the FA Cup. The 96 people killed were fans of Liverpool. The subsequent investigation concluded that the cases had not been related to any violent action on the part of the fans, but because of the excess of capacity and the poor state of the stadium, which did not meet the necessary safety requirements.
The "Hillsborough Tragedy" came four years after the "Heysel Tragedy", which had also involved Liverpool fans, and which had cost the English teams a six-year UEFA sanction without participating in European competitions and the Valley Parade Tragedy in which a fire killed 56 English fans. Although the facts of Hillsborough had not been directly provoked by violent acts, they were the fuse for the government of Margaret Thatcher decided to act with force and dictated the "Football Spectators Act" and the "Taylor Report" to eradicate the phenomenon of "hooliganism" and improve security in stadiums. Footballer Steven Gerrard, captain of Liverpool between 2004 and 2015, was affected by the accident. He has acknowledged that his 10-year-old cousin who died in the Hillsborough tragedy is his great inspiration. On September 12,2012, an independent commission of inquiry published a resolution deduced that the police were the most directly responsible for the security of the stadium that day and, therefore, the culprit of the tragedy.
British Prime Minister David Cameron offered his apologies in the House of Commons. Most of the families of the victims felt that justice was finally done. Although also another private investigation created in 2014 is still seeking justice for the 96 deceased.
