Montilla is a city and Spanish municipality of the province of Córdoba, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located as the natural head of the region of the South Cordovan countryside, being the capital of this together with Puente Genil and is the head of the judicial district, its geographical coordinates are 37°35'N and 4°38'W and it rises to an altitude of 371 meters above sea level, about 45 km south of Cordoba, 115 km north of Malaga and 130 km east of Seville, with an extension of 168.2 km² and in 2016 it had 23 365 inhabitants, what supposes a density of population of 138,66 hab / km ². The origin of its place name is ambiguous.
From the Muslim era comes the name of Montiya, prior to the Castilianization of the Arabic ending -iya, which denominates human groups in all its extension, as a group, neighborhood, town, city. From this time dates the name Montulia, given to the region. Other authors defend that its root is Castilian, appearing in the second half of the XIV century in the Book of the montería of king Alfonso XI like Montiella. However, in the eighteenth century its name was attributed to the contraction of monte-villa. Other scholars tried to obtain it from Monte Ulía. With certainty, it was the Montilyana of the Palatine Annals of Alhakén II cited between the route from Atana and Wacita Milihah. Historically it stands out as the birthplace of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Great Captain, born in 1453 in the castle whose ruins preside over the city, owned by his father, Pedro Fernández de Córdoba, Lord of Aguilar.
In 1630, King Felipe IV of Spain granted him the title of city to the locality. It is famous for the quality of its Pedro Ximénez grape, from which the well-known wines of Montilla are made, and together with the nearby Moriles and other Cordovan towns it integrates the wine region with the Montilla-Moriles Denomination of Origin. The city is the capital of two denominations of origin protected by the European Union: Vinos de Montilla-Moriles and Vinagres de Montilla-Moriles. Currently part of the triangle of cities considered the driving force of the economy of Cordoba, which, together with its position in the center of Andalusia, has conferred an important hub of roads and communications.
