Banderilla is one of the municipalities that make up the state of Veracruz, and which is part of the metropolitan area of Xalapa in Mexico, is located in the central area of the State on the Neo-Volcanic axis, in the last foothills of the Cofre de Perote, reason why its topography is irregular, but without accidents of importance. At coordinates 19°35 "north latitude and 96°56" west longitude, at a height of 1,600 meters above sea level. The hill of greater consideration is that of La Martinique.
Tradition has it that the municipality is so called because the thieves placed a flag on the top of the hill of Martinique to signal to accomplices the passage on the royal road, of cargoes that could be assaulted. It limits to the north and northeast with Jilotepec, to the east and south with Xalapa, to the southwest and west with Rafael Lucio. The municipality is irrigated by small tributary rivers of the Sedeño River, which in turn is tributary to the Actopan River. Its climate is cold-humid with an average temperature of 18°C. Its average annual rainfall is 1 thousand 500 mm. The ecosystems that coexist in the municipality are those of deciduous forest, with species such as alamillo, palo ravine, poplar, aile, palo de baqueta, ancino, tepet, black and red oak. Where a fauna is developed composed of populations of badgers, opossums, skunks, rabbits, armadillos and squirrels. Its richness is represented by minerals such as gilsonite, limes and bauxite.
Its soil is of coluviosol and in-situ type derived from volcanic rock and with little susceptibility to erosion. It is destined in its majority to agriculture and the cattle ranch.
