Nassau County

Nassau County is a county of the US state of New York, located in the New York metropolitan area, and located east of the city of New York, on Long Island. According to the 2000 census, the population was 1,334,544 people. The county seat is Mineola. The name of the county comes from an old name of Long Island, that at one time was called Nassau, by William de Nassau, Prince of Orange. The colors of the county flag, blue and orange, are also the colors of the House of Orange.

Together, Nassau and Suffolk counties are referred to by area residents as "Long Island," to differentiate them from the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn, which are geographically the western tip of the island. In 2005, Forbes magazine cited Nassau County, as well as its neighboring Suffolk County, as the safest region in the United States, with the lowest crime rates. According to 2004 data, Nassau County is the richest county per capita in New York State and the sixth in the nation, with an average income of $ 78,762. In 2005, Nassau was second in the United States for property taxes, with an average of $ 7,025.
