Falkirk

Falkirk is a town and council in the center of Scotland, which is located between the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, slightly north of both. In the 2011 census the population was 35 398 inhabitants making Falkirk the twenty-first largest town in Scotland. The city is located at the intersection of the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal, a location that was instrumental in the growth of Falkirk as a center of heavy industry during the Industrial Revolution. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was the center of the largest iron and steel industry, supported by the Carron Company that developed near the city.

In the last 50 years or more, the vast majority of Falkirk's heavy industrial base has disappeared, with the city's economy increasingly becoming oriented services. Currently, Falkirk serves as the main administrative and retail sales center for the Falkirk council area. Its attractions in and around Falkirk include the Falkirk Wheel, ruins of the Antonino Wall and the Callendar House.
