North Yorkshire is one of the forty-seven counties of England, United Kingdom, with capital in Northallerton. Located in the Yorkshire and Humber region -except for its northeastern tip, the former county of Cleveland, which belongs to the Northeast region- limits the north with Durham, the east with the North Sea, the south with East Yorkshire, the South of the West, and to the west with Lancashire and Cumbria, with an area of 8608 km² it is the most extensive of all the counties.
It was created in 1974 by the Local Government Act of 1972 covering an area of 8654 km², which makes it the largest English county.40% of its territory is covered by national parks and protected areas, among which include the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors.
