Rock is a broad term that brings together a variety of genres of popular music originated as rock and roll in the early 1950s in the United States and that evolved in a wide range of different styles in the 60s, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in the rock and roll of the 40s and 50s, coming from the combination of previous genres such as blues, rhythm and blues and country. Rock music was also heavily nourished by electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical music and other sources.

Rock has focused on the electric guitar, usually as part of a group consisting of singer, bass, drums and, sometimes, keyboard instruments such as organ and piano. At the end of the 1960s, referred to as the "golden age" or the period of "classical rock", distinct distinctive subgenres of rock emerged, including hybrids such as blues rock, folk rock, country rock and jazz rock, many of which they contributed to the development of psychedelic rock, influenced by the counter-cultural psychedelic scene.

The new genres that emerged from this scene include progressive rock, which extended the artistic elements. The glam rock, which highlighted the live show and the visual style. And the major, diverse and long-lived subgenre that is heavy metal, which focused on volume, power and speed. In the second half of the 1970s, punk intensified and reacted against some of these tendencies to produce raw and energetic music. The punk was an influence in the decade of 1980 in the development of other subgenres, among them the new wave, the post-punk and the movement of alternative rock. Since the 1990s, alternative rock began to dominate the genre and rose to fame in the forms of grunge, Britpop and indie rock.

Since then other fusion subgenres such as pop punk, rap rock and nu metal have appeared, as well as attempts to remember the history of rock, including the resurgence of genres such as garage rock, post punk and synth pop at the beginning of the 2000. Rock music also encompassed and served as a vehicle for cultural and social movements, leading to the creation of important subcultures including mods and rockers in the United Kingdom, and the hippie counterculture that spread in San Francisco in the 1990s.1960. Similarly, the punk culture of the 1970s originated the visually distinctive Emo and Gothic subcultures. Heir to the folk tradition of protest song, rock music has been associated with political activism as well as changes in social attitudes about racism, sex and the use of drugs, and is usually seen as an expression of the youthful rebellion against consumerism and conformism.
