Curtis Mayfield was a singer, songwriter and guitarist of soul and funk. The legacy of compositions, recordings and interpretations of Mayfield is enormous. As the main voice of The Impressions, he made some of the most important vocal soul recordings of the 60s. He began his solo career in the 70s, inspired by funk and adding urban features to soul music, being one of the greatest exponents of styles such as blaxploitation, chicago soul, uptown soul and psychedelic soul. Mayfield wrote most of his material, when this was not usual among soul singers.
He was one of the first musicians who became involved in the pride movement of African-American culture, embodied in his lyrics, in the same way that Aretha Franklin or Nina Simone did. As a producer and composer he was one of the great creators of soul chicago, working for and with artists of the genre such as Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, Major Lance and Billy Butler. As a guitarist, he manifests certain influences of more Latin black music, something that he also occasionally glimpsed in The Impressions in the 60s. During the following decade he improved his work as a guitarist and producer adding certain essences of funk and psychedelic rock. Mayfield was never willing to join the pop current of approaching the masses as they did, especially the Motown stars. In the year 2004 the Rolling Stone magazine placed him in the 98th position of his list 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
In addition, Curtis Mayfield is one of the few artists who has multiple inductions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1991, for the first time, as a member of the group The Impressions and, in 1999, for the second time, in recognition of his solo career.
